1 cup butter
1/4 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup ground almonds (unblanched)
1/2 cup ground hazelnuts
2 tsp. vanilla
powedered sugar
Set the oven at 300 degrees. Cream butter thoroughly, then add sugar and the remaining ingredients. Mix well.
Shape into balls about 1 inch in diameter. Roll in confectioners' sugar and place on cookie sheets. Chill for 30 minutes.
Bake 35 minutes. Cool. Roll in sugar again. Makes 36-42 cookies, depending on the how large you roll the balls.
Alternate recipe:
The Viennese Crescents recipe is very similar to Grandma Gwen's Noel Balls (Jimpop used to joke that she sent him out hunting for noels every December). Same recipe except hers calls for 2c of ground (or very finely chopped) walnuts, and she bakes them at 250 for 45 minutes after rolling them into 1" balls. No powdered sugar before they are baked, but roll in it while they are still warm, let the cookies cool, then roll in powdered sugar again. 4 dozen.
